Earth Day is the world’s largest environmental movement, and it’s quickly approaching. The day was born back in 1970 as a protest meant to draw attention to declining environmental conditions and poor policies to correct them. What started as a way to protest almost two centuries of unchecked industrial progress has turned into a 1 billion person event spanning the entire globe. Our team at QALO loves to embrace outdoor adventures so we’re thrilled to show our appreciation for mother nature whenever we get the chance. In honor of this special day, get outside and get a little dirty. Here are ten ways to get out there and get involved this Earth Day. 1. Walk the Walk If you’re able to... ditch the car and enjoy the outdoors with a nice walk or even a long bike ride. Commuting to work today? Try the local bus or joining a carpool. 2. Plant a Tree It’s simple, symbolic, and has a positive impact on the environment. We especially love this idea for families as the tree will grow with your kids, becoming a special part of your yard. 3. Become an Advocate Things like turning lights off when you leave a room, composting, and shutting the water off while brushing your teeth may sound small, but if we all do them, these things can make a big difference. Connect with people who share a similar love of the outdoors and come up with small practices with big impacts on mother nature. 4. Volunteer Most communities have events dedicated to Earth Day. You can find one near you by calling your local Parks and Recreation department. Then, get the family together, get outside, and get your hands dirty as you volunteer at your local Earth Day event. 5. The More You Know Even if you can’t do anything else, you can learn more about conservation. Read up on the issues impacting our world, and the action being done to help. A great place to start is at www.earthday.org. 6. Take a Hike Start your Earth Day off early at your local park or beach. Disconnect and unplug from your phone or computer and embrace the outdoors on an early morning hike adventure. 7. Swap out your Plastics One of the biggest problems facing our Earth today is our over-consumption of plastic. The easiest and best way to get control of this issue in a hurry is to stop using plastic shopping bags, opting instead for reusable cloth ones. Additionally, changing out bottled water for a faucet filter and reusable water bottle can make a huge impact, too. 8. Outdoor Dinner With the weather warming up, Earth Day is a perfect day to switch up the dinner routine, take the whole family outside by the grill and have dinner together during sunset. 9. Adopt a Highway Talk some friends, your family, or members of an organization that you’re a member of into working with you to adopt a local highway. You’ll spend a bit of time picking up litter, and a lot of time helping the Earth. 10. Take a Pause It’s not all about action. Sometimes the best way to celebrate Earth day is simply by pausing to take a moment outside and saying “Thank you,” to her. Get outside today to truly take in all that the Earth gives us. Did you know that the “O” in QALO stands for “outdoors?” We love being outside, and we are all about taking great care of our Earth.
