The start of the new school year is the perfect time to double down on healthy eating. It’s a great time to end the empty calorie snacks of summer and get your kids back on track with healthy, wholesome, and delicious after-school alternatives. Here are a few of our favorites.

Mexican Pizza

Everyone loves pizza. But kick the nutrition up a notch with this take from south of the border. Using fresh cheese and veggies, this tortilla-based pizza is sure to be a hit. Check it out!

Fresh Fruit Smoothie

Healthier than ice cream, but just as tasty. Kick artificial sugar to the curb by maximizing natural sugar found in fruit. By blending ice, fruit, and yogurt together you can create a creamy treat that’s almost too good to be true. Here’s a recipe for a mango-strawberry version.

Peach Pops

Turn popsicles, a summertime favorite, into a wholesome treat with ease. All you need are popsicle molds and a whole bunch of peach. This recipe calls for fresh peaches, agave nectar, peach yogurt, and peach juice. Yum!

Peanut Dip

Make an easy veggie tray focusing on this delicious peanut dip. Unlike plain peanut butter, this mix folds in fruit and milk for a more balanced treat. The secret is in the whipped topping and minced fruit. Check it out, here.

PBJ Bites

It’s your favorite sandwich, but baked into a dessert cup! These bite-sized morsels add some crunch to the classic with quinoa, sunflower seeds, and oats. It’s sure to be a hit.

Bring home some southwest flavor that is packed with healthy fiber in this twist of a classic quesadilla. Working in black beans and corn in place of chicken, these are great when served with sour cream and avocado. Get full details, here.

Nutty Cereal Cookies

Who doesn’t love a cookie? Most kids will be very happy if you offer them cookies as an after-school snack. Adding nuts, flax seed, oats, and dried fruit to the batter makes these cookies a notch above other varieties. Here’s the recipe.
