You’re thinking of popping the question. It’s an important question — the “Will you spend the rest of your life with me and all my flaws, like loading the dishwasher in that way you hate?” question. The “I will love you until the end of time and beyond, so let’s get hitched?” question. The “Will you marry me?” question. And, even though you’ve talked about it before, you want the actual asking to be an entire surprise. But, you aren’t even sure what size ring to get them! Sure, you can plan where you’re going to pop the question, whether you’re hiring a professional photographer or even what you’re going to say, but without a ring, what’s even the point? Here’s how to figure out their ring size without asking. 1. Measure a ring they currently wear. Many people wear rings, especially rings they got after graduating high school or college. Take one of those rings and measure it using a ring size chart while they’re sleeping, showering or away! That will give you an idea of what ring size they wear. Depending on their dominant hand, their finger might be bigger or smaller on their left ring finger (where they’ll most likely be wearing the engagement and wedding bands). So make sure you take that into consideration when ordering their ring. 2. Go with the average. Average ring sizes for women are between 5 and 7, but many women wear the sizes around them. Average ring sizes for men are between 8 ½ and 10. Using these averages can help you determine what size ring to order your soon-to-be fiance. Of course, guessing is a huge risk, especially if you’re planning on popping the question soon after you get the ring. Our Ring Size Chart Might Help! 3. Visit a jeweler. Either bringing one of your partner’s rings with you or going with the measurements you’ve taken, visit a local jeweler to ensure you get the right size. A good jeweler will ask you to describe your partner’s hands. Do their fingers swell often? Do they have thick knuckles at the base of their fingers? Maybe they had a hand injury when they were younger, and it caused their finger to sit oddly and not in a normal posture. These questions are important to answer prior to ordering your partner’s ring. 4. Measure it while they’re sleeping. If you thought guessing was risky, think again! Measuring their finger while they’re sleeping is one of the riskiest options to get their ring size without them knowing. However, if your partner is a heavy sleeper, then you should be able to get their ring size with no issue. Using a thin string, wrap the string around their finger until the ends overlap. At the point the string overlaps, hold onto the string and mark it with a pencil. Then, use a ruler to determine how long the string is and convert it into the proper ring size. Remember, a thin string will fit looser than a thick band. Our men’s silicone rings are typically the thickest of all our products, and they might fit more snugly than the thinner bands. Sometimes, it’s just easier to order what you think is their size and then send it back for resizing if it doesn’t fit well when they try it on for the first time. Because silicone rings are much less expensive than traditional metal bands, you can order a ring that you think is their size and one a size up or down to have a backup and then send the rings that don’t fit properly back after popping the question. Our silicone wedding bands for women come in a variety of sizes, so you can be sure to have the right size on hand. 6. Ask her friends or family. Sometimes, it pays to enlist some help. They’re all going to find out eventually that you’re getting married, so why not use their love for your partner to your advantage and ask them what your partner’s ring size is? Even if they don’t know, they can find out and report back to you. You might be surprised at how subtle they can be! Plus, moms tend to know everything — and chances are, they know your partner’s ring size. They might even know yours! 7. Remember that more rings mean different sizes. Depending on the style of the engagement ring you choose, your partner might need a larger or smaller ring size. One of the most common questions asked is if the wedding ring is on the top or bottom of your finger — and usually, it’s on the bottom. That means it needs to be big enough to get over the knuckle but small enough that it sits comfortably at the base of the finger. The thickness of the ring, type of metal and even whether or not it has diamonds can all determine ring size.
