As you get closer and closer to your wedding day, you’ve probably been wondering about how to place your wedding bands. For men, it’s typically pretty simple. You usually just slide on the one ring and you’re good to go. For women, it’s a bit different. They have their engagement ring to consider, after all! Most women wonder whether they have to wear their wedding band on top of their engagement ring or on the bottom. No worries, though — we’re here to help! Here’s some helpful tips on proper ring stacking. What the Tradition Says Traditionally, your wedding ring is worn under your engagement ring because it’s closer to your heart. This includes when you wear multiple wedding bands on one finger. They each stack on top of the other, with your engagement ring being the top-most band in the stack. At your wedding ceremony, you have two options for your engagement ring and wedding band: 1. Move your engagement ring to your right hand. Before walking down the aisle, move your engagement ring to the third finger on your right hand. That way, during the ring exchange, your fiance will place your band directly on your third finger, with the band at the base of your finger. Then, after the ceremony is over and right before you take your pictures, you can place your engagement ring on top of your wedding band. Some brides have been choosing to keep their engagement ring on their ring finger and just have their fiance add the wedding band atop the engagement ring during the ceremony and then flip the rings around afterwards. This is good if you’re having your photographer take close pictures of your hands during the wedding ceremony. Some women choose to wear their engagement ring at the base of their finger because it’s the ring that came first and then their wedding band and any bands that come later on top. Think of it in chronological order! Others move their rings to other fingers or hands as time goes on. This is especially true if you get a new band for important milestones in your marriage — first home, first child, anniversaries… There are so many reasons you might add to your stackable silicone ring collection, and moving them to different fingers is a great way to ensure they are able to be shown off every day! Some women also choose over time to stop wearing their engagement ring and instead just wear their wedding band, like their husbands do. This is a great idea for women who work in jobs that might be dangerous for them to have a diamond ring on, such as first responders or nurses. Even women who work as personal trainers or actively visit the gym should also consider wearing just their wedding band to prevent ring avulsion with their metal bands! Utilize Our Ring Size Chart So You Get the Perfect Fit Safety tip: When traveling, don’t bring your diamond engagement ring. Instead, either wear a simple metal band or a silicone one that’s much less expensive. That way, you don’t need to purchase ring insurance or worry someone will steal your ring. Diamond rings are a big indicator to local thieves you would be a good target for mugging or theft, but a simple band will protect you from locals looking to make a quick buck. Depending on the width and thickness of the wedding band and your engagement ring, that might also determine the order in which you wear them. Thicker bands tend to fit more snugly, so wearing the thicker band that fits slightly tighter on the base of your finger where it’s more narrow is a good idea. Regardless, it’s always important you use a ring size chart prior to ordering any rings to ensure you will get the ones that fit properly on your wedding day. The worst thing in the world is to order your rings and have them shipped just to find out that they need to be resized! Pro tip: At your wedding ceremony, don’t try to struggle and fit your fiance’s ring on their finger. Simply slide it onto their finger as far as it will go without resistance. When you start to encounter resistance, stop. Your fiance can adjust their ring themselves later. You definitely don’t want to hurt them while saying your vows!
