What is the Meaning of a Claddagh Ring?

You may have seen a Claddagh ring before and not realized that depending on how it’s worn, its significance changes.

Since QALO has specially designed Claddagh rings available for women and men for a limited time (through March 18, 2020), we figured we would explain the ins and outs of the Claddagh ring!

Whether you’re familiar with Claddagh rings or have never heard of them before, you’ll enjoy learning its storied history and the symbolism attached to it, so let’s dig in!

Meaning of a Claddagh Ring

The Claddagh ring is a traditional Irish ring that represents love, loyalty, and friendship - these also happen to be three of our top values here at QALO, so we truly resonate with what this ring stands for.

The design of this ring features three beautiful symbols - a heart (for love), a crown (for loyalty/fidelity) and hands (for friendship) - so it is commonly worn as an engagement or wedding ring.

History of the Claddagh Ring

The Claddagh Ring has been the traditional wedding ring in Irish culture since the 17th century. It originated in the little village of Claddagh in County Galway, Ireland and there are various stories that claim the origin of this ring. However, one of the main legends of the ring comes from a classic love story.

Who Can Wear a Claddagh Ring?

In the past, Claddagh rings were widely worn widely by women on the west coast and offshore islands of Galway. Often representing the sole major investment of a fishing family, they were handed down from mother to daughter.

Claddagh rings have become increasingly popular over time and are now being used between people around the world as engagement and wedding bands, as well as friendship rings and promise rings.

However, it’s thought to be very bad luck for people to purchase a Claddagh ring for themselves. Instead, it must be given or received as a gift.

How Should a Claddagh Ring Be Worn?

The ring can be worn on different fingers or hands, depending on your status.

- Single - Wear the ring on your right hand with the heart facing outwards, showing you are open to love and not in a relationship.

- Relationship - Wear it on your right hand with the heart facing inwards, showing your heart is taken and you are in a relationship.

- Engaged - Wear the ring on your left hand with the heart facing outwards.

- Married - Wear the ring on your left hand with the heart facing inwards.

Remember, while these rings celebrate Irish traditions, their beautiful and timeless design make them a stylish, modern ring choice that anyone can wear (but perhaps heed the warning of not buying one for yourself, as mentioned above!).
